The Art of the Window

As an institution that platforms contemporary and experimental Black art, Long Gallery Harlem is proud to collaborate with curator and writer, Diallo Simon-Ponte and arts professional Sundia Nwadiozor on an ongoing exhibition series in the LGH storefront window display. 

Beginning in April 2025, a series of curators have been chosen by Simon-Ponte to each pair themselves with an artist whose work will be featured in the LGH Window for six to eight weeks at a time. The selected curators specifically fall under the criteria as cultural producers outside the museum context who are working to create rigorously discursive and financially sustainable conditions for artists’ practice within the gallery model. Each pairing is invited to think through the topographical landscape of the “storefront window display” and create a meaningful intervention. These collaborations work to nurture the pulse of Harlem as a bustling center of Black intellectual thought as the city welcomes the reopening of the Studio Museum. 

This series is inspired by the unwieldy story of Salvador Dali destroying his own window display at Bonwit Teller in 1939 in which goldfish swam through veins of translucent mannequins.
